History:
To start, it is important to note that Scar has an extended history that came from a series of books, unaffiliated with Disney, that came out after the movie was released. Although Disney published the books, they did not necessarily endorse the back-story that Scar was given. However, in the Lion King fandom, these books are popular and are considered canon to the Lion King universe.
In the story “A Tale of Two Brothers”, as a young lion, Scar’s original name was “Taka”. One day after being told from his father, Ahadi, that Taka’s brother, the ever-popular Mufasa, was to ascend the throne, Taka was unhappy. In his anger, he breaks his promise to go hunting with his father, and instead tries to solve a drought problem they’ve been experiencing. He meets up with the hyenas Shenzi, Bonzai, and Ed, who tell him that if he were to make Mufasa look like a fool in fron of their father, it would make Taka look good, and gain his seat at the throne.
Taka tricks Mufasa into going to the waterhole to confront a buffalo that refuses to share the water. Mufasa tries to reason with the buffalo, but Taka interrupts and says that he must leave by order of the Lion King, or Mufasa will battle with him. The buffalo charges at Mufasa, who escapes to the safety of Rafiki. The buffalo, angry, decided their herd will attack Taka instead. As Mufasa returns, he finds the heard attacking Taka, one slashing his face with his horns and knocking him unconscious. Mufasa jumps in, preparing to defend his downed brother, until their father arrives with other animals to stop the herd. Rafiki later examines Taka’s face and sees the deep cut on his left eye that would not fully heal. Taka requests that he be called Scar from then on as a reminder of his foolishness for letting his anger overtake his mind.
In the movie, Scar is angry at the fact his brother’s newborn son will be the next to assume the throne of King, when he feels he deserves the role. He decides to try and have Mufasa’s son, Simba, killed, making it look like an accident. He tempts the eager Simba into wandering into the Elephant Graveyard where his recruits, the three hyenas Shenzi, Bonzai, and Ed, try to kill Simba. However, his efforts fail when Mufasa arrives in time to save him, thus making Scar rethink his plans.
While discussing the failed hit with the hyenas, Scar comes up with the idea to kill both his brother and Simba. (While singing one of the best songs in the movie!) He devises a plan to place Simba in danger again, only this time, in a much more precarious situation. Scar takes Simba out into the gorge and says his father has a surprise for him. Convincing the cub to stay, he signals the hyenas to stir up a herd of wildebeest, which stampede down into the gorge towards Simba.
As the stampede commences, Scar, acting upset, calls for his brother to help Simba, pointing him in the direction of where he clung to a tree. Mufasa races towards Simba, catches him, and to brings him to safety, but is knocked off the rocks by the herd. In a final attempt, Mufasa leaps and climbs onto a steep rock face where he sees Scar at the top. Desperate for help, he cries out to Scar, who, in turn, sinks his claws into Mufasa’s paws, whispers the dreaded “Long Live the King…” and releases him, watching Mufasa fall to his death.
Simba, after the stampede, finds his father’s dead body. Scar approaches Simba, feigning comfort, and tells him it was Simba’s own fault for killing his father. He suggests Simba to “Run. Run away and never return.” As the cub runs, he gets the hyenas to chase him to kill him. The hyenas yet again fail to do their task as Simba exiles himself from the Pridelands. Feigning sadness, Scar tells the pride of the events that took place, saying both Mufasa and Simba were dead, and that he will assume the throne.
“Mufasa's death was a terrible tragedy; but to lose Simba, who had barely begun to live... For me it is a deep personal loss. So it is with a heavy heart that I assume the throne. Yet, out of the ashes of this tragedy, we shall rise to greet the dawning of a new era... in which lion and hyena come together, in a great and glorious future!”
However, during the time that passes, Scar’s reign is shown to have backfired and the kingdom falls near complete ruin as a drought hits and food is scarce.
Once Simba realizes his true place, and returns to his kingdom, Scar is overwhelmingly surprised to see him “…[growls under his breath towards hyenas] Alive!” Simba threatens Scar, urging him to step down, but Scar has a few devious tricks up his sleeve. (Er, paw…) He first has Simba admit that it was he who killed his father, calling him the murderer. Simba denied murdering him, but Scar corners him to the edge of the rock cliff, sending him dangling above a fire caused by lightening. Playing with the imagery, Scar says “Oh right, this is exactly how your father looked before he died.” He reprises his actions by clawing Simba’s paws and whispering, “And here’s my little secret… I killed Mufasa!”
Simba, in his rage, finds the strength to leap and shove Scar down, having him admit what he just revealed to him. Once he does, both the lionesses and the Hyenas go into a frenzy, giving Scar a point to escape. However, Simba manages to chase him to the top of Pride Rock. Scar begins to beg for Simba’s mercy, pleading, “You wouldn’t kill your own uncle…?” and claiming “It was the Hyenas! It was their fault!” Simba offers Scar exile, just like he did to him as a cub. Scar feigns his comply, but counters with embers into Simba’s face. They have an intense battle that ultimately ends with Simba throwing Scar off the side of the cliff.
Scar manages to survive the fall and looks around to see the hyenas surrounding him.
“Oh, my friends!”
(Shenzi)“Friends? I thought he said that we were the enemy!”
(Banzai)“Yeah, that’s what I heard!”
The hyenas, feeling betrayed, attack and kill Scar by eating him alive.
One last bit of information worthy of note would be to mention that Scar had an undetermined, off-screen relationship to a lioness, Zira, who appears in the sequel. It is also unclear whether he might have had offspring with her or other lionesses. It is again popular canon to pair the two together, and claim that Kovu is their son, despite the fact it is mentioned that Scar is not Kovu’s real father. In canon from the second movie, Scar had chosen Kovu to be the heir, though certain timelines within the series conflict this.
Personality:
Narcissist! To a T! The song he sings, Be Prepared, perfectly showcases this:
“Of course, quid pro quo, you're expected
To take certain duties on board
The future is littered with prizes
And though I'm the main addressee
The point that I must emphasize is
YOU WON’T GET A SNIFF WITHOUT ME!!”
“…I'll be King undisputed, respected, saluted and seen for the wonder I am!"
**Scar’s narcissism could only be derived from his long hatred of his brother, Mufasa. Since he had hoped and dreamed that he would be the king someday, only to be shafted from the path he desired, left him dwelling on his hate by justifying it with himself. He hates his brother for taking his dream away where he felt he could rule better. Over the years, Scar would isolate himself from the rest of the pride, continuing to lose himself in his own thoughts, the basis being: “I should be the king!”
Scar is a manipulative character that is cold hearted to the bone. He only ever wanted to gain power, use power, and never lose power. **Scar has a sharp mind when it comes to formulating different scenarios. He is not a brutish character who decides that if he’s going kill, he’ll kill. He is more cunning than that. His first plot was to have Simba killed so that he may have a better chance at the king’s slot. Instead of doing it himself, he gets accomplices, the hyenas, to do his bidding. He makes a plan to plant the tempting idea of the elephant graveyard in young Simba’s mind, making him want to find it despite his father’s wishes to stay away from the land beyond their borders. He planned on the hyenas to kill Simba to make it seem like an accident. However, when this plan foils, Scar, in his steaming anger, boils up another plot, one that would surely work. He coordinates a scheme where young Simba is in a gorge waiting for a “surprise” from his father. Scar’s hyenas rile up a heard of wildebeest to cause a stampede. Scar plays up a distraught act to Mufasa about Simba, luring him in to save him. This plot doesn’t go exactly as planned, as Scar finagled his way to drop Mufasa, and Simba manages to stay alive. However, once Simba is supposedly dead, Scar’s plan succeeds. No one would ever suspect that he thought up the murder plots. His mind is sharp when it comes to figuring out new situations in which he can get his way.
Like most villains, he was extremely charismatic, able to worm his way out from many situations or devise the right words to put on a good show. He’s an extremely good liar, and a great supporter of sarcasm.
Scar: Why! If it isn't my big brother descending from on high to mingle with the commoners.
Mufasa: Sarabi and I didn't see you at the presentation of Simba.
Scar: That was today? Oh, I feel simply awful.
Young Simba: Hey, Uncle Scar, guess what?
Scar: I despise guessing games.
Young Simba: I'm gonna be King of Pride Rock.
Scar: Oh, goody.
Young Simba: My dad just showed me the whole kingdom. And I'm gonna rule it all. Heheh.
Scar: Yes. Well, forgive me for not leaping for joy. Bad back, you know.
[flops on his side]
Young Simba: Hey Uncle Scar, when I'm King, what'll that make you?
Scar: A monkey's uncle.
Young Simba: [laughs] You're so weird.
Scar: You have no idea.
He was also equipped with a sharp tongue.
Scar: You see? He admits it. Murderer!
Adult Simba: No! It was an accident!
Scar: If it weren't for you Mufasa would still be alive. It's your fault he's dead. Do you deny it?
Adult Simba: No.
Scar: Then you're *guilty*.
Adult Simba: No, I'm *not* a murderer!
Scar: Oh no, Simba, you're in trouble again. But this time, Daddy isn't here to save you. And now everyone knows *why*!
However, though he has an edge to his words, he lacks the physical prowess to defend himself, thus making him more of a coward when it comes to fighting situations.
Mufasa: Don't turn your back on me, Scar!
Scar: Oh, no, Mufasa. Perhaps *you* shouldn't turn your back on *me*.
Mufasa: [roars, runs to stand before him] Is that a challenge?
Scar: Temper, temper. I wouldn't *dream* of challenging you.
Zazu: Pity! Why not?
Scar: Well, as far as brains go, I got the lion's share. But, when it comes to brute strength... I'm afraid I'm at the shallow end of the gene pool.
**When presented a stressful situation that he cannot handle, Scar will use his wits to try and save himself. Throughout the movie, there was never an indication that Scar was good at fighting, until the end scene with Simba. However, he loses the battle. The best way to describe his physical abilities in that scene was only out of pure fright, facing the possibility of death. Although he started the fight he was provoked and cornered. Like any animal would, he did what he could to defend himself because he was scared.

Adult Simba: You don't deserve to live.
Scar: But, Simba, I... am... family. It's the hyenas who are the real enemy. It was their fault. It was their idea!
Adult Simba: Why should I believe you? Everything you ever told me was a lie.
Scar: What are you going to do? You wouldn't kill your *own* uncle...?
Adult Simba: No, Scar. I'm not like you.
Scar: Oh, Simba, thank you. You are truly noble. I'll make it up to you, I promise. How can I, ah, prove myself to you? Tell me anything, anything.
**Another way to describe his cowardice would be the fact that he doesn’t want to get his hands dirty. Through both murder plots, he has his henchmen do the dirty work whilst he sat back and enjoyed the show. The only point in which he actively took part in Mufasa’s death was when he dropped him from the cliff, and it was a moment he did not mind savoring.
Scar: Where is your hunting party? They're not doing their job.
Sarabi: Scar, there is no food. The herds have moved on.
Scar: No! You're just not looking hard enough.
Sarabi: It's over. There is nothing left. We have only one choice. We *must* leave Pride Rock.
Scar: We're not going anywhere!
Sarabi: Then you have sentenced us to death!
Scar: Then so be it!
Sarabi: You can't do that!
Scar: I'm the king! I can do whatever I want!
Sarabi: If you were half the king Mufasa was, you...
Scar: [knocks Sarabi unconscious] I'm *ten* times the king Mufasa was!
Ruthless, vain, cunning, and cold are the best ways to describe Scar.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Scar does not have any super powers. His best defense is his twisted mind and his sharp tongue. He has the natural power of persuasion, but nothing more or less than any average person with a quick wit. Whether his words convince others or not is up to those who are willing to listen.
In physical terms, as a lion, Scar has sharp teeth and claws, to which would be altered in his journey to Tranquility.
Inventory:
None. Lions do not keep personal possessions.
Appearance:
Originally, Scar was a lion. On his journey to Tranquility, he was given a human form:
Height: 6’0”
Build: Thin, with lean muscle.
Skin color: about number 27 on this chart:
de.academic.ru/pictures/dewiki/70/Felix_von_Luschan_Skin_Color_Chart.JPG
Eyes: Bright green. Eye whites with a slight yellow haze to them.
Hair: Black, thick and long, almost wavy. Combed back out of face. Small, bushy sideburns.
Facial Features: Darkened skin around eyes, somewhat sunken, prominent cheek bones, sharp pointed jaw line, black goatee, signature scar over left eye, long pointed nose. Slight protrusion of canine teeth from lips.
Other: Nails are slightly grown out and sharp pointed.
**My drawn interpretation can be seen here:
Age:
Scar’s age is never directly mentioned in the series. Relatively, he would most likely have an age around his 40’s or 50’s, but for all intensive purposes, the best age to portray would be around his mid thirties. 35.

In a floating void of space and time, a cloud of heaven, or the fall towards hell balances a lion, or what was once a lion. This being, this soul, the remains of a once living creature currently drifts in a ripple of nothing, and everything, contemplating itself; what it once was.
That pain. That dreadful, awful, unbearable pain. Scar could feel each and every one of those hyenas’ jaws biting his flesh! Every tooth! Every claw! Peeling the skin right off his bones! To think that the pawns of his own strategic game managed to overtake their king. None of this would have happened if they had followed through with their commands
If only they had killed Simba when he told them to!
The spirit sighs, exhausted. Then he groans. He never envisioned his death being this way. He was to be laid to rest after my reign had reached its peak. He would be an old lion by that time, but with a son in his image to continue his legacy. His vision. He would be ceremonially carried off, the lionesses weeping for him, the hyenas bowing their heads…
It wasn’t supposed to be this way!
But what was Scar to do now? He doesn’t even know if this is happening right now as he lays rotting on the rock, or if he’s on his way towards the stars as Scar’s father so lovingly preached about.
At least he doesn’t feel the pain anymore…
The thoughts cease as they warp towards their new destination. Indeed, a place amongst the stars, though not quite what he was expecting.
Comms Sample:
[Fiddling with the communicator, the once lion grumbles and accidentally presses a button that turns on the recording device for an audio feed.]
What is this thing?
[The recording muffles and scratches. There’s a clicking sound as though someone was trying to bite the speaking end of the device. After a minute, it stops.]
This vile body! My teeth have been reduced to that of a gazelle’s! [He pauses, contemplating his surroundings.] Ugh. Who would have thought that being sent amongst the stars would put you into this wretched form enclosed in a cold rock cave with strange shapes and lights… And with an external skin lying about?
[Some shuffling is heard as he picks up the crew issued uniform.]
Mmph. Without my fur, I can feel the chill up my spine. Then again, it could be from sitting on this freezing floor. [A bit more shuffling is heard as he looks around himself.] I suppose I have no choice but to get used to these new… legs. [He hangs on the word, disgusted at the sight of his new, human form. The communicator makes a loud clack sound as it falls to the floor and the audio shuts off.]
